UGC panel wants all colleges to start in September

The new academic year for universities and colleges can start from September instead of July in view of the Covid-19 pandemic, a panel appointed by the University Grants Commission (UGC) has said. Another panel has recommended conducting online exams wherever possible. If the recommendations are implemented, students may not have winter holidays next academic year, and colleges may have to work on Saturdays and holidays to compensate for the lost working days.

One of the committees led by Haryana University vicechancellor R C Kuhad was formed to look into ways of conducting exams in universities amid the lockdown and work on an alternative academic calendar. The second committee, set up to suggest measures to improve online education, was led by Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) V-C Nageshwar Rao. Both the panels submitted their reports on Friday and the ministry of human resources development is likely to issue a notification next week after studying the reports.

Final year exams may be conducted soon after lockdown ends

P Duraisamy, vice-chancellor, University of Madras, said, “We can make it up by working on Saturdays and winter vacation. Usually, semester exams would be conducted in November, and in December there would be winter vacation. By working during the winter holidays, we can achieve mandatory 90 working days per semester.”

The expert committee also proposed to conduct online test for end-semester exams. “Except Delhi University, all other universities expressed concerns about conducting online test for end-semester exams. It is difficult to conduct online exams as all students may not be take them,” said the VC who was one of the special invitees to the UGC’s expert panel to improve online education.

After the lockdown, exams can be conducted immediately for final-year students. “Once the colleges are reopened, we canconduct the exams and publish results in 30 to 40 days. For the first-year and second-year students, exams would be conducted leisurely and evaluation can be done during weekends,” he added. An official from the Anna University also ruled out conducting online exams saying all students may not have access to internet. “Any delay in conducting exams will affect
final-year students. If the exams are held in July, we will be able to declare the results by the end of August and they can begin postgraduate admissions in September,” Thomas Amirtham, principal, Loyola College, said, adding that winter vacation would be cut short to enhance the working days. “If we work on Saturdays and winter holidays, the academic year can still be finished in May,” he said.

Colleges and universities also need to complement classroom coaching with online classes. K Maran, director of Sairam Engineering College, said the delay of academic year or change in exam schedule will not affect students. “If a disaster strikes a state or a country, then it would affect the higher education prospects or job prospects of students. But since the effect has been global, everything would be delayed,” he said.

What should I do after completing my bsc ?

According to me, further study is best option for B. Sc. graduates, it is area where you can explore yourself in multiple areas as per your interest, B. Sc. degree also have an excellent employment opportunities. Jobs for B. Sc. graduates are not just restricted in the field of science but also they can explore others areas like management, law etc. You can work in various areas which include both science and non-science fields. I would suggest few masters programme:

1. M. Sc. or Master of Science:

M. Sc. is the most obvious and logical choice for B. Sc graduates when it comes to higher studies. Master degree in a specialized subject can open a lot of door for doctorate, research and excellent employment opportunities for students.

2. MCA or Master of Computer Application:

With the IT boom dominating Indian economy, computer applications and IT industry has emerged as one of the most lucrative career options available to B. Sc degree holders. For students who want to pursue their higher studies in this domain, MCA is an ideal academic programme.

3. MBA or Master of Business Administrations:

This is one of the most sought after career choice for graduates of every stream, and B. Sc graduates are not an exception to this rule. Many institutes have started offering MBA degrees with specialization in scientific domains like hospital management, laboratory management and IT management that are ideal for B. Sc graduates.

MBA is a terminal degree and a professional degree. Accreditation bodies specifically for MBA programs ensure consistency and quality of education. The core courses in an MBA program cover various areas of business such as accounting, applied statistics, business communication, business ethics, business law, finance, managerial economics, management, marketing and operations in a manner most relevant to management analysis and strategy. It can lead to the next step in their careers.

4. B.Ed or Bachelor of Education

For B. Com graduates, who have the potential to be expert teachers, B.Ed degree would be an excellent choice of further studies. B.Ed degree coaches the students into different and unique pedagogy techniques that aid them in improving their teaching prowess even further.

Bachelor of Education or B. Ed. is an undergraduate program of 2-year duration. It is a course offered for those who are interested in pursuing career in teaching and related fields. The B.Ed. degree course is mandatory for teaching in higher primary schools and high schools.

5. Bank and government exams:

This is an option in which there is a huge competition but you being a science graduate, may be find it easy to have a grasp over Quant and Logic section for the aptitude tests. You don’t need huge investment for this. Just sit with the books and gain knowledge with speed and accuracy. Have patience. It may not be easy to do it in your 1st attempt.

6. Actuary:

If you think you have a brain which can deal with enormous amount of Mathematics and Statistics, this is an option you can go for. This will require a lot of patience but that will be very worthy as an actuary’s salary is something around 40 lakhs an annum. The investment is also not that huge in comparision to MBA.

You may think that I have not been specific for these two options. But to be frank, a B Sc grad is in now way considered very special. The only positive part is that the curriculum must have honed you to study hard and thus the dedication required for them can be attained easily for science grads. Otherwise an M Sc can be thought of as an option but that will again be subject specific.
