Five students of Acharya Nagarjuna University (ANU) College of Engineering have been suspended for allegedly indulging in ragging on the university campus. They ragged and harassed their junior.
The incident took place on Thursday night. But, the university authorities did not lodge any police complaint till Friday night.
College Principal P. Siddhaiah told The Hindu that the decision to suspend them was taken following a complaint lodged by the father of the junior.
In an emergency meeting of the Anti-Ragging Committee of the college held on Friday, the students – M. Shankar, Manoj Kumar, Venkat Rao, Navven and Kalyan – were suspended.
The victim, a native of Narasaraopet, is pursuing first year.
“The decision to suspend the students was taken by the ARC, which was ratified by ANU Vice-Chancellor A. Rajendra Prasad. The students were debarred from the hostel,” said the Mr. Siddhaiah. The university management informed the matter to the parents of the five students.
An inquiry has been ordered into the ragging incident, the Principal said.
A few months ago, ANU was in the news following the death of architecture student Rishiteshwari, who allegedly committed suicide due to ragging.
Police registered a case and arrested a few persons in the case.
The government ordered a one-man inquiry into the alleged ragging on the campus.
